I decided to enter motherhood as a single woman. During a period of questioning and listening, I dreamt of my son. I knew that Cedar was meant to be here at this exact time, despite how difficult it might seem for me. I celebrated his creation and had no doubt that he was a being that needed to be here.

The expectant Mbuti mothers enter the Ituri forest alone to receive a song for their unborn child that will be sung throughout the child’s lifetime, as a reminder of where they came from. Inspired by these women, I decided to do the same. Entering the drippy Cascadian forest, I emerged with a song from the twigs, moss and fern that called my son Cedar forth to bloom. “Cedar” was written and recorded during the pregnancy. I’ve been singing his song to him ever since.
